Carnival of Venice

The Carnival of Venice is the most important festival featuring a fusion of Venetian tradition, culture, entertainment and transgression in a unique city that manages to attract thousands of people each year.

Its origins are very old, the first witness back in 1094 by documentation of the Doge Vitale Falier, which tells of public amusements scattered throughout the lagoon city and in which the word "Carnival" is mentioned for the first time.

The institution is given at the time of the Carnival of Venice, where the population was granted a few days to devote exclusively to the fun and festivities, during which the Venetians and foreigners poured into the city to celebrate with music and dancing. In these festivals scattered throughout the city, the Venetian mask became the main subject anonymity permitted a kind of leveling of all social divisions and was approved even mockery of public authorities and the aristocracy.

Evidently these concessions were tolerated and considered as a release of tension and resentment that were created within the Republic of Venice.

The event takes place from 15 February 8 March 2011.
